Donegal Firefighters swap hoses for buckets in annual collection day

Ireland’s hosepipe ban has put a damper on the Donegal Firefighters Association annual car wash, but they have refused to abandon their admirable fundraising plans.

Donegal Firefighters are respecting the nationwide water conservation notice by swapping car wash hoses for buckets on their collection day this Saturday August 4th.

The Firefighters have raised over €750,000 in aid of Donegal Hospice and the Northwest Hospice over the last 14 years. This year they hope to add to the total with bucket collections around the county in various locations close to fire stations in lieu of a car wash.

The public is being called on to support the firefighters’ event on Saturday and donate to important local causes.

Chief Fire Officer for Donegal, Joseph McTaggart said: “Donegal Fire service supports the firefighters in their endeavours to raise funds for two worthwhile causes.

“This year with the current hosepipe ban and after discussions with the council water services it was deemed that a car wash would not be appropriate but we fully support the firefighters on whatever they choose to do that day!”

Secretary of the Donegal Firefighters Association said: “On Saturday the 4th of August, we will be holding a bucket collection in all fire grounds around the county in various locations close to fire stations in lieu of a car wash.

“We would ask that the public, who have been extremely generous over the years, support us on the day. We would also like to thank the Fire service and the Donegal County Council for the use of the equipment.”

A number of crew from Letterkenny station were invited up to the Donegal Hospice recently to see what the money went towards.

Hoist systems for the rooms were installed in the last year and with the hospice looking to improve their family areas and day centre, it is clearly evident that any money raised will be well spent.

The Donegal Firefighters Association thank the public in advance and we hope that they can continue raising much needed funds for both hospices.
