Letterkenny’s Cathedral Quarter has been one of the most innovative and exciting projects launched in Donegal in recent years.
It has proved a runaway success in that after years of neglect the town’s historic Church Lane is now not only buzzing with new businesses but there is also a marked increase in visitor numbers.
As part of their events for Heritage Week, the Cathedral Quarter team has announced they will be holding a Traditional Buildings Skills project, a talk on whales and dolphins that visit our native shores, and a drawing course with a difference. All three aim to be both informative and enjoyable!
With many of the buildings on the Church Lane more than 100 years old it is hardly surprising that there is great interest in preserving the traditional building skills.
With this in mind Sean Brogan, of Tir Conaill Conservations, will be leading the traditional building skills Training days on two successive Saturdays, the 18th and 25th of August between 10 am and 2pm
Cathedral Quarter Secretary, Donnan Harvey, explains that he sees these Traditional Building Skills Training Days as an integral part of Heritage Week, and a great opportunity to educate whilst implementing the Conservation Plan.
He commented: “We are building upon the success of last year workshops and introducing new skills. In the first of the training days, weather permitting, Sean will be demonstrating the repair of an old stone wall outside No. 2 Church Lane. On the second training day, he will lead participants as the set about restructuring a traditional outside drain and restore a sash window.”
This event is free and everyone is welcome to come along.
In recent years Donegal has hit the headlines as a place rich in marine life. Images of whales and dolphins off Malin Head have gone viral on social media. The odd thing is that few of us know anything about the wonderful creatures who visit our shores, or how our lives and actions affect the ocean.
If you want to learn more why not go along to ‘A Talk on Whales and Dolphins’ at Dillon’s Hotel on Letterkenny’s Main Street on Sunday, August 26. It will be held for an hour, between 11 am -12noon.
What should prove a fascinating talk will be given by leading marine biology expert Michael Marrinan. Admission is free.
John D Ruddy is an artist, actor, YouTuber and author of the Manny Man Does History series. He’s a man of many talents and loves to share them. He will be giving a drawing workshop based on his illustration style of Manny Man.
Through the drawing of an historic battle participants can explore the details of the history and the weapons used. It’s a great way of bringing the past to life.
This workshop, which should prove a great way to spend an afternoon, will be held on Wednesday, August 22nd in Dillon’s Hotel from 2pm til 3.30pm.Bookings are advised. Adult: €5. Child: €2. Family: €10
