A national support group for people and families affected by ADHD will have their first Donegal meeting in Letterkenny this month.

The voluntary-run HADD-ADHD Ireland group will hold their first Parents and Adult support meeting in Letterkenny on the 28th August 10.30-12pm in Letterkenny Community Centre, Pearse Rd.

HADD-ADHD Ireland has been in existence for more than 30 years, is led by volunteers, supporting individuals and families affected by ADHD and provides a number of services including educational and social resources.

HADD’s mission is to make life better for people affected by ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyper Disorder).

“We are an organisation in Ireland made up of volunteers – parents of children with ADHD, individuals with ADHD and professionals. We are dedicated to providing as much up-to-date information, resources and networking opportunities to individuals with ADHD, parents of children with ADHD and the professionals who serve them,” HADD spokesperson Nicola Coss said.

“We provide support and advice through our support phone-line, facilitate seminars, produce publications, organise information sessions; run Solution Focused Brief Therapy courses for young people, facilitate parenting / individuals with ADHD specific training courses; work to raise awareness of the condition and contribute to research. HADD is a working Member of ADHD Europe.”

HADD Ireland is a registered charity no. 16314. The organisation will soon be changing their name to ADHD Ireland in an effort to clarify the work that they do.

Coss added: “These invaluable parent / adults with ADHD support groups are sometimes the only lifeline that the families have in their lives to chat, to receive information and generally to make them feel less isolated. These groups are facilitated by local professionals on a voluntary basis.

“The benefits of the support groups are that they normalise the challenges these families face on a daily basis. They increase self-esteem, parenting confidence, assertiveness and the social interaction greatly improves mental health. We would like to expand on these groups and educate parents further with the help of local professionals.

“We are also looking for professional volunteers to help us coordinate support groups for parents and adults with ADHD. Check us out at HADD.ie or please contact us on 01 8748349 /nicola@hadd.ie or turn up on the night.”
