Goldfish prizes at Bundoran Adventure Park don’t swim with PETA

Bundoran Adventure Park has removed a controversial prize from the funfair this week following a complaint from animal rights organisation PETA.

The family park in South Donegal had been offering live goldfish as prizes at an arcade stall. However, the  People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals issued a notice to end this practice following complaints from concerned visitors.

A letter was sent to Bundoran Adventure Park calling for a ban on live-animal giveaways on August 9th. The letter stated that ‘animals are not trinkets’.

PETA warned the adventure park managers that: “The vast majority of the goldfish taken home from your park are likely to perish within days – the victims of unintentional neglect or deliberate cruelty – as the novelty quickly wears off once the reality of having to care for a living being sets in.”

“Giving fish away as prizes to anyone who will take them – without any regard for that person’s ability to care for an animal with specific needs – is irresponsible and cruel,” writes PETA Outreach Coordinator Teodora Zglimbea.

The letter said that fish have the capacity to experience fear and pain. “So while fairgoers are having the time of their lives, these fish are living in a house of horrors,” Zglimbea said.

Bundoran Adventure Park have since removed the goldfish prizes from the funfair, telling customers on Facebook today that the fish are “now living happily in our lovely huge ponds.”
