Listen: Leah Gallen hopes for European Juniors call after title win

Leah Gallen hopes to be on the Irish squad for next month’s European Junior Championship in Russia after winning her third national title yesterday.

The Raphoe ABC ace stopped Sophia Hopkova in the 66kgs final at the National Senior Cadet finals in Dublin.

The towel came in during the third round with Gallen firmly in command. The win follows up her Girl 5 title from earlier this year and a previous Girl 2 crown she had won.

Now, Gallen is in the mix to be selected to box in Anapa at the European Juniors.

“I’m waiting on the good news now for the next couple of weeks,” she said.

“It has been my dream, to get an Irish vest.”

Gallen had a year out of the ring, but the lure of the sweet science proved too tempting to resist.

And she joined forces with Raphoe and two Irish titles have followed this year.

She said: “I’m just over the moon. I worked really hard, even harder for the second. The extra training paid off.

“It was tough to get back, but I’m going better than ever. Gerard (Keaveney) and Gary (McCullagh) put so much work into me. I couldn’t have got to here without them.”
