There were few prouder men in Donegal this weekend than Donegal Boxing Board President Peter O’Donnell.

An avid supporter of all Donegal boxers, to see Leah Gallen winning an Irish title yesterday in Dublin was a special moment, but that she was in the colours of his Raphoe ABC made it extra special.

“It’s a great honour for the club, for the county and it’s reward for the coaches, who put in so much hard work into the boxers,” he said.

“It takes a great boxer to come back and win a second one. It’s great for Leah.”

Gallen defeated Sophia Hopkova for victory in the Senior Cadet 66kgs final.

O’Donnell added: “You see a lot of young ones that you earmark for success and the next thing is they’re out of boxing. Leah has stuck with it and she’s very committed. Two Irish tittles in a season is a great feat in any man’s language.”
