Belfast’s Brian McFlynn pushes himself to the limits to win the Extreme North Quadrathon, one of Ireland’s most challenging running races.
With the flattest terrain and fairest weather conditions of the four days, the final route from Buncrana through Muff to Moville produced the fastest times of the four day event.
However, while competitors were challenged by humidity that was nothing compared to the severe rain and wind of the previous days. Hugely impressive given that runners had already completed three marathons the previous three days.
Brian McFlynn from Belfast was first over the line for the final day of Extreme North’s Quadrathon event with a superb time of 2hrs 57 minutes, the first of his 4 marathons to come in under the 3 hour mark.
A 13 minute gap behind Frenchman Francis Delassus was simply too much for local man Nigel Davenport to make up on the final day with Francis Delassus finishing runner up overall.
Nigel was second over the line with 3hrs 20 minutes with Francis hot on his heels on 3hrs 22 minutes.

Not to be outdone by the men, leading female for the 4 days was Deirdre Lynn.
The event attracts an international field with the UK’s James Bennett (competitor 371) completing his 100th marathon on Extreme North’s final day. James is the youngest person at the age of 27 in the UK to run 100 road marathons.
The half marathon competitors also recorded impressive times with Peter Dimbleby recording the best time in the half marathon with a fantastic 1hr 24 minutes and like Brian McFlynn led the race throughout the event. Second place went to Aidan O’Neill and third place to Paddy Ward. Best female in the half marathon was Morag Thompson who ran consistently, first over the line on each of the 4 days.
Organiser Harold McGuinness said, “It is such a buzz to see this event go from strength to strength.
“There is such positive feedback from the competitors on the route, the challenge, the scenery and the atmosphere around Extreme North.
“I would like to thank everyone involved in supporting it but most especially the competitors who like an extreme challenge and we at Extreme North certainly to intend to keep providing that challenge”.
