Gaoth Dobhair are just one win from securing the Division 1 League title – and manager Mervyn O’Donnell says squad depth has been crucial this season.
With several players unavailable for much of the summer due to county commitment and with Michael Carroll (pictured) playing his trade in Boston, the Magheragallon men have dug into the reservoir.
But now they can secure a Division 1 crown with a win over Milford on Sunday, just as the Championship – and a real battle royale that pits them in a group alongside fellow heavyweights St Eunan’s and Naomh Conaill – comes into view.
“We didn’t expect to be in this position with a lot of lads in the county panel and Michael Carroll in America,” O’Donnell said after a 2-15 to 0-12 win over Glenswilly last night.
“We have good depth and we have some of the older lads back to give us depth.
“We would love to go and win the League in Milford. We have another bite at the cherry. Milford have been going great lately and they haven’t been lying about. They won’t want us winning on their home patch.”
O’Donnell hailed the influence of Donegal star Odhrán Mac Niallais, who scored 1-8 last night having kicked 1-7 in Sunday’s win over Naomh Conaill.
The Gaoth Dobhair boss said: “Odhrán is unreal. He drifts about and some people think his work rate is small. He’s a machine. He got stuck in and he’s out ahead of everyone. He’s a model player. He’s very creative and he does things people can’t do.”
