Plans for the Burtonport Sewerage Scheme are going to be presented by Irish Water to the public at an information event on Monday, September 10th.

The company said it is working to end the ‘unacceptable practice of discharging untreated wastewater into Rutland Sound’ by developing a new wastewater treatment plant as part of the Burtonport Sewerage Scheme.

The public are invited to attend the information evening on Monday 10th September from 5.30pm-7.30pm to meet the project team and learn more about Irish Water’s plans to progress this important project.

A statement from Irish Water said: “The practice of discharging untreated wastewater to Rutland Sound is unsustainable. The new wastewater treatment plant will bring benefits to Burtonport in terms of health, integrity of the environment and improved water quality for all.

“Cleaner water will enhance Burtonport’s amenity value and act as a platform for social and economic development. The new pipes, pumping station and wastewater treatment plant have all been sized to accommodate an increase in the local population and will facilitate future growth in the area.”

The project will also ensure that the water quality standards set down by regulatory bodies will be achieved.

Anyone interested in receiving further information or in asking questions about this project are invited to attend the information evening.
