US President Donald Trump has announced plans to travel to Ireland in November 2018.

Trump will visit Ireland later this year as part of a European trip to participate in Armistice Day commemorations in Paris.

The White House stated the purpose of Trump’s trip to Ireland is to “renew the deep and historic ties between our two nations.”

A spokesperson for Leo Varadkar has confirmed the news this evening, adding that Trump will make a short stopover in Ireland on his way to or from France.

“It will be an opportunity to follow up on the issues discussed in the White House in March including migration, trade, climate change and human rights issues,” said a Government spokesperson.

Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney reacted to the news, tweeting, “The US President is always welcome in Ireland. Our two countries have such strong historic, economic, cultural and family ties. Maintaining those connections is always a top priority.”

Further details of President Trump’s upcoming visit are yet to be announced.
