It was hard to think it in the immediate aftermath, but Bernard McGeehan will ultimately be able to reflect on a year of huge progress at Sean MacCumhaills.
Even with the Championship campaign yet to get underway, it will go down as one of their best of recent times, with promotion sealed to Division 1.
Yet the manner of missing out on the Division 2 title – and a first senior trophy in ten years – bit them hard last night.
“There’s not point getting away from it, the boys are down,” McGeehan said.
“It’s nothing to be ashamed of. We’ve had an outstanding year.
“We’d have taken this if we were offered it at the start of the year. Termon’s need was as much, if not more, than our’s. Going up as champions would have been nice, but it’s not an advantage – you start the same as anyone next year.”
MacCumhaills lost Darren O’Leary – who had posted 1-7 – to an injury late in the game and his absence was a telling blow in the late stages when the home side were guilty of some erratic shooting.
McGeehan said: “There were a lot of tired bodies and the decision making wasn’t up to scratch. But they didn’t have much room to breathe. It was very intense out there.”
