President Michael D Higgins will launch a limited edition coin this month in honour of Ballyshannon-born blues guitarist Rory Gallagher.

The Central Bank of Ireland has created a €15 Silver Proof Rory Gallagher Coin to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the musician’s birth in 1948.

A limited issue of 3,000 pieces has been designed by Michael Guilfoyle featuring Gallagher’s iconic image and his signature Fender Stratocaster.

The coin is the first issue in a new series highlighting modern Irish musicians, which will also include commemorations of  Phil Lynott (of Thin Lizzy) and Luke Kelly (of the Dubliners) in 2019 and 2020.

President Higgins will officially unveil Gallagher’s coin at an event in Aras an Uachtarain on September 17th.
