Finn Harps duo start for Ireland U16s for draw in Bulgaria

Finn Harps duo Fionnan Coyle and Daniel Gildea started for the Republic of Ireland U16s in today’s 1-1 draw with Bulgaria.

Coyle and Gildea had featured as substitutes in Tuesday’s 4-2 win and were elevated to the starting XI by manager Paul Osam today.

Ireland took the lead just before the half-time break. Oran Crowe’s header found the back of the net in the 39th-minute to give the side a deserved lead.

Bulgaria’s Martin Smolenski scored his second goal against Ireland in as many games midway through the second-half to ensure the home side took a share of the spoils.

Osam was pleased with what he saw from his side over both games.

“There’s more positives than negatives to take from the two games. We won one and drew the other. We came away from home with a new group of players and performed very well.

“I learned a lot about the players this week. It will definitely help us with selecting the squad for the Victory Shield in Tralee in November.”
