County councillor Patrick McGowan has spoken today of his anger at the lack of maintenance which he claims has led to the collapse of the side wall of the iconic Ivy Bridge in Cloghan.

Cllr McGowan said despite several attempts to get proper maintenance money from Minister Ross’s Department they have had no response.

And he claims that in the meantime, roads and bridges like this are literally falling apart.

He referred to the old saying “a stitch in time saves nine “

He said “In this case, the lack of basic road maintains on local and regional roads all over the county will cost millions to bring back up to standards by the next government as this Government has clearly shown they don’t care about Rural roads or services aid Cllr Mcgowan.

“It is not known how long the Ivy Bridge will be closed. Engineers were out today examining the damage and will let us know tomorrow their plans.

“In the meantime, it means a long detour for local residents and businesses.”
