This week at Pello, the team look back on top hairdresser Patrick Gray’s experience at London Fashion Week A/W 2019. The fashion event kicked off with a show featuring vegan and eco-sustainable textiles clothing with hair styled by #cruelty-free brand Aveda.
Letterkenny based hairdresser Patrick Gray and the owner of Pello Hairdressing an exclusive Aveda Salon was very much part of the hub of last Thursday night’s massive opening show for eco Designer Duo VIN + OMI as they kicked of London fashion week A/W 2019 with a star stopping show held at London’s iconic St Pancras International.
The models, made up a mixture of street cast and professionals, showcased an unbelievable collection of 70 different looks and the creative hair to match these inspirational looks were styled by the Aveda Hair Team led by global educator and lead stylist Bea Carmichael.
Patrick is so privileged and honoured to be invited for the second time this year to London Fashion week as part of the Aveda Hair Team.
In February this year he worked Backstage with the Aveda Team for LFW S/S 2018 where the team styled the hair for 3 different designers under the leadership of Bea Watson/Carmichael and Jon Reyman.
The Grande Terrace of the Victorian train station was a hive of activity as a line up of celebrities in the front row looked on in awe as the models strutted along the terrace showcasing the brands largest eco and vegan clothing collection to date.
With a ‘Plants and Plastics’ theme, VIN + OMI opens one of the world’s largest fashion show with a statement, as the designers along with their models -included Jo Wood- arrive at the venue in an iconic red double decker London bus.
The designers started developing eco- fabrics in 2004 with a focus on the environment and supporting local communities.
“It made me so proud to be part of it,” says Patrick “as this is exactly the same ethos behind the Aveda brand we use ourselves in the salon.”
Patrick added, “I very honoured and excited to be part of the opening show which was also filmed by the BBC.”
The 2 days prep backstage in the lead up to the show was run effortlessly and so professionally by Aveda Team leader Bea Carmichael especially considering the enormity of the prep with a massive 70 models to style.
The designer duo themselves VIN+OMI were incredibly detailed and hand on in adding the finishing touches to their overall looks.
“It’s not exactly your typical day in the salon,” says Patrick, “and you couldn’t buy the experience.”
“It’s incredibly full on and the whole Aveda team were unbelievable.”
“It was a very different show from February London Fashion Week,” says Patrick.
“Like all things that run effortlessly, even down to a busy weekend in the salon, it’s all about team effort and you never stop learning.”
The show made a huge statement as the venue St Pancras International was chosen to mark the reopening of its public water fountain, aimed at cutting the use of plastic bottles.
The designer duo used cow parsley blended with flax which is woven into an eco fabric called Flakley to create some of the clothes for the show.
They also used hybrid metal fabrics, manufactured from cans collected by homeless people. The bags were made from from fabrics derived from plastic bottles which were recycled and then woven. They also created vegan ‘leather’ made from the skins of chestnuts.
VIN + OMI definitely delivered something very different to what you might expect to see at London Fashion Week with their sustainable approach to fashion.
Their theme of ‘Poodles and Pentagrams’ was evident throughout the catwalk.
“The brand that we use ourselves in the salon Aveda is still quite a new concept to people in Donegal,” says Patrick.
“It’s important to us that our clients are aware that the products are not tested on animals. Aveda were also the first company to use 100% post consumer recycled PET packaging.
“Aveda are also the first beauty company to manufacture with 100% certified wind power and the first privately owned company to sign onto the Ceres Principles, a groundbreaking 10 – pointcode of corporate environmental conduct created in 1989.”
“All our products are people tested and cruelty free. They also contain no parabens, no petro chemical, or nitro-dye.
“With Aveda,” says Patrick. “we know what you’re made of.”
