Jason Quigley says a lot would have to happen before a fight with Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan would become a possibility.
After O’Sullivan was KO’d by David Lemieux in Las Vegas on Saturday night, Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Roberto Diaz floated the idea of a Quigley-O’Sullivan bout in Ireland.
Diaz’s comments had Irish fight fans purring at the prospect of the two Golden Boy punchers clashing on this side of the Atlantic.
“The fight between me and Spike would be amazing,” Quigley said on Off The Brawl,
“It would be a great fight to bring to Ireland.”
However, with O’Sullivan now expected to drop to the 154-pound light-middleweight division, it would be a surprise were it to come to pass.
Quigley, though, would have no issue facing his fellow Irishman.
He said: “If it comes along and if Spike is someone I have to fight to get to where I want to the friendship will be put aside. I can’t say ‘yes it’s going to happen’ or ‘it’s not going to happen’.
“If Spike is moving to light-middle, it won’t happen, but who knows?.”
Quigley, meanwhile, went against the grain in his view of ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s majority decision won over Gennady Golovkin on Saturday night.
Quigley believes ‘Canelo’ was right to be awarded the win – and suggested that Golovkin’s time at the top is at an end.
“I thought Golovkin started to show his age,” Quigley said.
“Golovkin was landing a few shots to the head, but while he was doing that Canelo was absolutely pounding the body with very powerful shots. That would have wore Golovkin down. It was ferocious body work.”
