Bonner could return to boost Glenfin ladies for Ulster clash

Glenfin hope to welcome Yvonne Bonner back into their team for Sunday’s Ulster quarter-final against Cavan champions Lurgan (Pairc Taobhoige, 2pm).

Bonner missed Sunday’s county final win over Movlle as she is in Australia taking part in the Women’s AFL international rookie camp in Melbourne.

Bonner was this week confirmed as one of eight Donegal players nominated for a Ladies All-Star Award and could be back to boost her team’s Ulster hopes.

“Fingers crossed she will be able to be back; we’re hoping she’ll be back on Saturday,” Glenfin boss Francie Martin said.

“It would be a massive boost to have Yvonne back there. She is on top of her game this year and she’s a real force for us.”

Three of those taking part in the camp in Melbourne will be given full-time AFL contracts.

In one trial game this week, Bonner scored four goals and three behinds. Clearly, that unstoppable form has translated Down Under.

In Bonners absence, Karen Guthrie and Katy Herron stepped up with the scores to overcome Moville 4-7 to 3-7 after a tense battle at O’Donnell Park, while Anna Marie McGlynn turned in an excellent display, marking Niamh Hegarty.

“Those girls were really impressive,” Martin said. “A lot of girls stood up and gave us an extra 10 or 20 per cent. They really did. The county girls were all very good.”

Lurgan defeated Crosserlough 2-12 to 2-7 in the Cavan final earlier in the month, but Glenfin will be fancied to advance.
