A Royal Python snake has been taken to Letterkenny for rehabilitation after being rescued by the ISPCA.
The Donegal Animal Rehabilitation Centre (ARC) is now appealing to the public for a new home for the Royal Python found in Co Leitrim – after being abandoned by her previous owner.
The three-year-old female was spotted over the summer at Ecopark outside Kinlough by visitors and was subsequently rescued by the ISPCA, along with the help of volunteers at the park.
The snake, named Penelope, has been transferred and cared for at Tropical World at Alcorn’s Garden Centre.
Having a lifespan of 20-years, the species is the smallest of the African pythons and is popular in the pet trade, largely due to its small size and typically docile temperament.
ISPCA Senior Inspector Kevin McGinley said Penelope is now ready for a “forever home”.
The Senior Inspector has appealed for someone with an interest in and knowledge of reptiles, who can provide the right accommodation to mimic an appropriate natural environment.
Royal Pythons are solitary creatures and, therefore, a potential owner must house Penelope alone.
