Councillor Martin Harley has announced St Columba’s College in Stranorlar has secured funding for a lift to be fitted in the school for a student with a disability.

Mr Harley, who is now on his fourth year on the board of the school, said: “This is a vitally important piece of work that is going to improve the facilities at St Columba’s.

“I was delighted to get the call this morning from principal Tom Rowan after confirmation was received from the Department of Education that the appeal had been successful.

“St Columba’s had originally been turned down for the work but thanks to work on the application and the support of Minister Joe McHugh’s office we got this over the line.”

Fine Gael Councillor Mr Harley said: “I’ve known Tom Rowan for more than 30 years and I know the lengths that he is willing to go to for the students.

“This lift will improve one young person’s quality of life everyday while they are at St Columba’s and that should be our aim in everything we do in education.”

Joe McHugh, Government Chief Whip and Minister for the Irish language, Gaeltacht and the Islands, said: “I was delighted to hear the news this morning and I want to wish Tom Rowan, all the staff and pupils at St Columba’s all the best and I hope that this investment in the school makes a real and lasting difference.”
