Raphoe siblings Chloe and Sam Magee have outlined their ambitions to make the next Olympic Games in Tokyo in two years’ time.
Chloe Magee competed in the Beijing, London and Rio Olympic Games in the women’s singles, but is aiming to make it to Tokyo alongside her brother Sam in the mixed doubles.
“We started really well in the last Olympic cycle…We know how tough it is and we have to continue to get good results,” Chloe told the latest episode of Badminton Unlimited.
“Every day we’re getting better. If we can keep slowly improving we’ll be ready when the next Olympic cycle comes around.”
Last April, the Magees won a bronze medal at the European Championships, beating Poland’s Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Zieba in a quarter-final.
The Magees are now working with coach John Quinn.
Another brother, Joshua, is competing regularly for Ireland and niece Rachael Darragh is steadily on the rise.
Badminton Ireland coach Daniel Magee, another of the Magee family, says Sam and Chloe are a perfect fit to make Tokyo.
“They bring the best out of each other on the court,” he said.
Sam said the deep-rooted competitive edge has been a key.
He said: “My dad played in the club and he took us along. We always wanted to beat each other. It has gone on from that.”
