All to play for as Gorman hopeful USL can nick Inter-League Tournament

Ulster Senior League manager Anthony Gorman is confident his men can still capture the Michael Ward Trophy.

Heading into the final day of the FAI Intermediate Inter-League Tournament, the USL must beat Leinster at Bonagee and hope that Connacht can defeat Munster in Leckview Park (kick-offs 11am) to take the silverware battle down to goal difference.

“All we can do is go out and do our own job, try and win the game,” Gorman said.

“We have to go and try to win the game.”

A 2-1 loss to Munster on the opening night left the USL with an uphill battle, but Gerard McLaughlin’s winning goal against Connacht in Maginn Park has kept alive the local hopes.

Gorman said: “We’re delighted with the result and we still have something to play for. The boys are in good enough spirits and we have a big game.

“We done our part and won against Compact. We have to do the same against Leinster. We’re positive that Connacht can take something off Munster.”

The USL have injury concerns over BJ Banda (ankle), Ryan McConnell (leg) and Thomas McMonagle (shoulder) heading into the final game.

Gorman said: “Leinster at any time will be a formidable opponent.

“They seem to be physical and direct down the middle. They play off second balls and flicks, trying to get the opposition turned. In one way, they’ll be quite similar to how Munster set up.”
