Donegal League roundup: Engaging weekend of soccer in Donegal League

written by Stephen Maguire October 7, 2018

Several games in several competitions took place across the county in the Donegal Soccer League on Saturday and Sunday – including league and cup action.

Saturday
Voodoo Venue Cup
Drumkeen United Reserves 1 Keadue Rovers Reserves 4
Drumkeen found themselves up against a very good Keadue team in this Voodoo Venue Cup preliminary round game at St Patricks Park on Saturday.
While the visitors deserved their win the final score was perhaps a bit harsh on the home team who hit the post on three occasions during the game.
Keadue dominated the early part of the game and took the lead on nine minutes with a goal from Michel Greene. Keadue continued to dominate the game and looked comfortable on the ball.
Drumkeen, on the other hand, did not help their cause when they had the ball as they struggled to keep possession with passes frequently going astray.
Drumkeen did manage a few good attacking moves in the first half with the best one ending with Benny Kyle firing just wide. Shortly after that Keadue were on the attack again and  Ultan Boyle added a second goal.
Christy Greene then added a third for the visitors. With the half drawing to a close Drumkeen were on the attack and nearly scored when a good run by Darren Bonner set up Marty Gallagher but his effort hit the Keadue post in what was the last kick of the half.
Keadue added a fourth goal early in the second half when a Peter McGee corner was not dealt with by the Drumkeen defence and went in off a Drumkeen defender.
Drumkeen kept plugging away and actually played a lot better in the second half and saw two more of their efforts strike the post.
With nine minutes left Marty Gallagher did pull a goal back for Drumkeen but it would prove nothing more than a consolation goal.
Sunday
Brian Mc Cormick Sports Premier Division

Rathmullan Celtic 2 Cappry Rovers 2

In what can be described as difficult conditions at the seaside today, the Hoops kicked-off their first home game of the league campaign on the front foot.
On the half-hour mark, Dara Patton’s searching long ball was badly misjudged by the outrushing Cappry Rover’s goalkeeper and JayDee Alawiye was rewarded for his anticipation when he was presented with the opportunity to tap in from close range to give the Hoops a deserved lead.
Rovers only response, initially, was a high shot fired just wide of the goal by the ever willing Cathal McShane after some good pressure from Alan Boal.
The second half saw the away team respond and sharpshooter Cathal McShane produced the moment of the day when he controlled and volleyed a looping ball from 40 yards over Hoops keeper Shaun Gallagher.
Referee Joe McHugh had to wave away complaints from a section of the home support who deemed McShane’s high first touch as dangerous play. Five minutes later, with the wind in their sails, Rovers took the lead through a powerful header from Tristin Ferris, after a mix up in the Hoops defence.
Michael Deeney’s men responded well to this setback as Eoghan Rafferty started to control things in the middle of the park and the Hoops endeavours were rewarded on 80 minutes when Alawiye’s tricky wing play resulted in the wide-man to be brought down inside the penalty area to give the Hoops a chance to share the points.
With the usual caretaker of penalties Eoin Sheridan absent through injury, Alawyie himself cooly dispatched the penalty giving Rovers keeper no chance and set up a high octane finale as the Hoops sensed a winner imminent.
However, it was not to be as both sides settled for a point apiece. Cathal McShane up front impressed for Rovers as JayDee Alawiye had a stormer for the Hoops while Dara Patton and Eoghan Rafferty put in a great effort for the Hoops cause.
Keadue Rovers 5 St. Catherines 0

Keadue came out on top at home on Sunday with a comprehensive scoreline after a very good display. The game was played in atrocious conditions with driving rain and gale force winds.

With the wind behind them, the home side had a good start and after Aidan McHugh was fouled in the box after five minutes, captain Chris Greene stepped up to dispatch the penalty to give Keadue the lead.

After a period of sustained pressure, the hosts went 2-0 up when Danny McGlynn ran on to a through ball from Hugh Moy and tucked it well past the keeper from 10-yards. Aidan McHugh was again close on twenty-five minutes with the away keeper saving well from his shot.

Keadue were very dominant at this point and made it 3-0 on 28 minutes when, following a defensive mix up, Aidan McHugh poked the ball home on the left side from a tricky angle.

After 33 minutes, the home side made it 4-0 when keeper Danny Rodgers long kick found Shaun Yank Boyle and despite his first effort being saved, he knocked in the rebound.

St. Catherine’s battled away towards the end of the first half, getting a bit more of the ball but the home team were very comfortable, moving the ball around well and ought to have been further ahead. Into the second half and with the wind behind them St. Catherine’s had more of the ball and the game evened out.

On 52 minutes they had a good effort on goal when Christy Cunningham’s shot from long range was well saved by Danny Rodgers. A few substitutions followed for Keadue and on sixty minutes, substitute Adam Neely’s left-handed cross was met at the near post but just stabbed wide by Shaun Yank Boyle.

However, on 65 minutes, following good work down the right wing by Hugh Moy, Shaun Yank Boyle hit a rasping effort into the top of the net to make it 5-0.

A few more substitutions followed by both sides and it was fairly scrappy in the final twenty with St. Catherine’s giving it their all and Keadue happy to hit on the break with plenty of pace going forward.

Glenea United 2 Kildrum Tigers 1

In wet windy conditions in Glasserchoo, it was always going to be hard to play good football. Glenea played with the wind in the first half, pushing on and keeping Kildrum pinned back.
After seven minutes, Carlos O’Reilly went close but his effort cleared the crossbar. Glenea went one up on the 15th minute, Michael Barry played in Ciaran McGeady, who shot low and hard to the corner from 20 yards.
The second goal came within five minutes, Paddy Cannon being the dead ball expert for the day took the 25-yard free kick, Keenan Gibson in goals managed to get his hand to it but couldn’t keep it out. Glenea came close to a third goal in the 35th minute when O’Reilly played in Darren Ferry but Gibson managed to get down low and hold onto it.
In the 42nd minute, Kildrum came close with a counter attack and Joe Coll pulled off a good save from Matthew Crossan.
In the second half, Kildrum now held the wind advantage and were set-up more attacking.
In the 52nd minute, Kevin  Mc Hugh played in Jonny Carlin but his effort went wide and in the 62nd minute Darren Doran had a good shot from 20 yards – narrowly missing the target.
On 63 minutes Kildrum pulled one back, the ball played low into the box with Doran slotting in at the back post. Glenea were still dangerous on the counter and after 72nd minutes, O’Reilly played in Barry who had a great strike skim the bar by inches.
With a quarter of the game left, Glenea were on the counter-attack again with McGeady through on goal but a good tackle from Crossan cleared the danger.
Kildrum missed another opportunity in the 78th minute during a goal-mouth scramble.
Temple Domestic Appliances Division Two
Ballybofey United 2 Drumoghill F.C. 3
Drumoghill visited Ballybofey on Sunday and returned to Moss-side with all three points.
With the game scoreless at the break it looked as though it would be a low scoring affair but both sides found their shooting boots before returning for the second half.
Drumoghill took the lead before Mark Griffin equalised for Ballybofey. Drumoghill went 1-3 in front before Griffin pulled another back however the home side wasn’t able to find an equaliser.
Cranford United 0 Convoy Arsenal 1

Another disappointing day for Cranford as yet again they had the majority of chances but their luck was out. Played in difficult conditions Cranford controlled most of the ball and had a couple of good chances but couldn’t score.

Convoy took the lead after 20 minutes when an inswinging corner carried the whole way into the net.
Cranford came out with a high intensity in the second half and pegged Convoy in their own half but chance after chance went by with the Cranford keeper not having a save to make. Disappointing result for Cranford at home for the second week in a row.

Lagan Harps 3 Lifford Celtic 3

A last-gasp equaliser from former Lagan schoolboy Conor Mulhern earned Lifford a point in this thrilling encounter. Playing with the aid of a strong breeze Lifford opened the scoring on twenty minutes, Paul Lynch firing home a free from 25 minutes.

Wimpey Carlin then struck the crossbar as they went for a second. Lagan equalised on 30 minutes when a long throw from Ciaran Quinn was flicked on and Dean Murray fired home.
They went 2-1 up when a great ball from Seamie Cullen found Alberto Rovelli and he superbly lobbed the advancing keeper. Lagan went 3-1 ahead early in the second half when Ciaran Quinn rifled home a free from forty yards.
Lifford got one back minutes later when a cross was deflected in by an unfortunate Lagan defender. Lifford put on the pressure for the last fifteen minutes but Lagan was always dangerous on the counter-attack.
With time almost up Lifford won a throw near the Lagan penalty area.
Paul Lynch launched a long throw-in which Lagan couldn’t clear and Conor Mulhern drove home the equaliser. Both teams deserve great credit for their efforts in difficult condition.
In a great team effort Ciaran Quinn, Caolan Murray and Alberto Rovelli were Lagan’s best.
For Lifford Kevin Mc Brearty, Wimpey Carlin and Paul Lynch were best.

Donegal Physiotherapy & Performance Centre Division Two
Glenree United 0 Whitestrand United 1
Glenree started with the wind at their backs and from a free kick which was flicked on Stephen Doak found himself in front of goal but lost his footing at the crucial moment in the first minute of the game. Glenree were in total dominance and keeping the Whitestrand backline firmly on their toes.
Paddy Kelly was called into action when he pulled off a good save from Eoghan Kelly free kick in the 18th minute. Whitestrand were dealing well with the onslaught of attacks but just weren’t testing Kelly enough in goals.
The away side’s first real effort came in the 40th minute when a mix up in defence gave Liam Gilroy a chance just on the edge of the box but his effort was straight at Blaney in goals.
In the second half, Whitestrand tried to make the most of the strong wind and got their wingers into the game as much as possible to swing in crosses that were swirling everywhere in the air.

In the 67th minute, the first lapse in concentration from the backline of Glenree led to them conceding after a cross into the box that Kevin Loughrey ran onto to head into the bottom corner to give his side the lead.

The goal gave the away side great heart and for the first period in the game they were in control creating a few half chances but couldn’t beat Oran Blaney who did well on numerous occasions to keep it at one nil.

The home side fought hard to try to get an equaliser and Kelly pulled off the save of the day from a John Mc Clafferty header that looked destined for the back of the net but he somehow kept it out in the 87th minute.

The game ended with Whitestrand leaving Glenree Park with the all important points.

Raphoe Town 5 Kerrykeel ’71 F.C. 2

Raphoe started the game well going one up after four minutes when DJ Kelly volleyed home an Oliver Quinn cross. Kerrykeel got back on terms in the 10th minute from a corner.

Raphoe took the lead again in the 50th minute when Christy Bogle slotted home a DJ Kelly cross.
DJ Kelly got his second goal on 65 minutes after brilliant work by Dylan Brolly.
Kerrykeel pulled one back with a penalty in the 75th minute. Paddy Gallagher made it 4-2 from the spot in the 80th minute.
Dylan Brolly sealed the points when scoring an amazing solo effort with only two minutes remaining. A great team effort from Kerrykeel.

Deele Harps 2  Letterbarrow Celtic 1

Deele entertained an in-form Barrow side but it was the home side who took all three points. The hosts have been digging out results in recent weeks following an opening day disaster.

Ryan McColgan gave Deele the lead on five minutes when he finished well. Deele could and should have extended their lead in the first half but couldn’t apply the killer touch on the front of goal.
Letterbarrow punished Deele on 30 minutes with Gerry McBrearty finishing well. The second half saw the away side dominated possession but they couldn’t convert it into any meaningful chances. Deele clinched all three points with a Ryan McColgan free sailing all the way into the net with 10 minutes remaining. Team performances.
