Three designs for the new Fintra Bridge for South Donegal have been presented to Donegal County Council this week, marking a major step in the progress of the project.
A workshop was held in Donegal Town on Tuesday for Consultant Engineers Roughan and O’Donovan to present designs to Chair of the Donegal Town MD Cllr Michael Naughton, officials from Donegal County Council and Engineers from Donegal County Council Road Design Department
The €7 million bridge project will link the South Donegal area to the Glencolmcille area and will be another vital infrastructural link for the people of South and South West Donegal.
Cllr Michael Naughton welcomed this week’s design presentation and commented, “This bridge on the R263 Killybegs to Glencolmcille Road is very narrow. It is reached by a series of dangerous bends on the Killybegs side. Only one lane of traffic can cross the bridge at a time and it is particularly challenging for long vehicles. Yet it is used by HGVs, buses and is part of the Wild Atlantic Way Tourist Route.
“The road is the main artery to south west Donegal and with so much being invested in developing tourism to Sliabh Liag, Glencolmcille, Carrick and Kilcar by Donegal County Council and Tourism Organisations, a major realignment of the bridge is crucial.”
“Three extremely well designed proposals were put forward for discussion at County Council Level at our Donegal Town Municipal District meeting and we look forward to now showcasing the three designs to the public and local community in Killybegs soon.
“ This investment to our road infrastructure is welcomed by the local community and business owners in this part of the county,” concluded Cllr Naughton.
The Donegal County Council Road Design and Engineer Department will meet with local landowners before it goes to public consultation. The public consultation evening will be held in Killybegs soon after, where the three designs will be displayed and discussed before agreeing the final design and proceeding with the construction of the new bridge.
