Away task for Donegal against Fermanagh in 2019 Championship opener

Donegal will begin the defence of their Ulster SFC crown with a quarter-final against Fermanagh in a repeat of the 2018 final.

The draw for the 2019 Ulster SFC was made this evening and has given Donegal a short away trip to Brewster Park in Enniskillen for a quarter-final.

The pairing means that Declan Bonner comes up against former Donegal manager Rory Gallagher, who is managing his native Fermanagh.

All-Ireland finalists Tyrone will face Derry in a preliminary round with the victors of that tie set to face Antrim in a quarter-final.

The draw has Donegal, Fermanagh, Antrim, Tyrone and Derry on the one side of the draw.

There is also a tasty quarter-final with Cavan at home to Monaghan.

Donegal won the county’s ninth Ulster title in 2018.

Goals by Ryan McHugh and Cian Mulligan sealed a 2-20 to 1-15 win over Cavan in the preliminary round.

Mulligan and Hugh McFadden hit the goals in a 2-16 to 0-16 triumph against Derry before Jamie Brennan and Leo McLoone netted to put Down to the sword, 2-22 to 1-12, in a semi-final.

Donegal were comfortable winners in the Ulster final as McHugh and Eoghan Ban Gallagher scored first-half goals in the 2-18 to 0-12 win against Rory Gallagher’s Fermanagh that secured the Anglo Celt Cup again.

Donegal had been fortunate with home draws in recent years. In 11 of the last 12 years, Donegal played a home game in the Ulster Championship, with the exception being 2014 when they overcame Derry at Celtic Park.
