Listen: How a ‘balaclava on a stick’ helped Declan Boyle win National Rally title!

Declan Boyle won his third National Rally Championship title thanks to an eighth-placed finish at today’s Donegal Harvest Stages Rally.

The Lettermacaward man, who had James O’Reilly calling the notes in the WRC Fiesta, needed a top eight place to seal the title – and he did just that to add to his crowns from 2013 and 2014.

“It was a tough year and there was so much going on, it’s unreal,” Boyle said.

“Conditions are terrible. They were rough.”

For the last three stages, Boyle’s windscreen steamed up and presented a big problem.

“We had a balaclava on a stick trying to clean the windscreen trying to see out!

“One chicane, we had it too deep. It just shows you, it could all go wrong.”

Boyle confirmed that he’ll be back at the wheel for 2019 to ‘give it another rattle’.

The rally itself, based in Jackson’s Hotel, and run around three loops of three stages in the Finn Valley area, was won by Monaghan’s Sam Moffett. He had 7.9 seconds to spare on Josh Moffett.

Donagh Kelly and Conor Foley were in third while the Joseph McGonigle-Ciaran Geaney combination were fourth in the BMW mini.

The ‘Milkman’ Declan Gallagher and Derek Heena were the leading two-wheel car and finished fifth overall.

Group N was won by Aidan Wray and Kieran McGrath.

Martin Doherty and Darragh Doherty won the Historics while Brian Moore and Lorcan Moore were the Junior winners.
