Donegal mum’s kidney donation inspires charity fundraiser

A local family’s positive experience of organ donation inspired staff and management of local company Marine Harvest Ireland to raise €8,650 for the Irish Kidney Association.

Donegal teen Jodie McGrory is leading a happy and healthy life thanks to a life-changing kidney donation from her mum Maire.

Jodie was born with only one kidney, which by mid-2017 was down to only ten per cent of normal function.

Jodie’s mother Maire donated one of her kidneys to her daughter last December. Almost a year on from the transplant, Jodie is happy to say she’s in good health.

Jodie father Ray is a fitter with Donegal-based company Marine Harvest Ireland, which hosts a fun run/walk each year as part of its staff and community wellbeing initiative. The company’s annual run is carried out to support a charity close to its heart.

The annual event, which took place this year on Saturday September 1st, raised the funds for the Irish Kidney Association through a combination of sponsorship raised at the event and money raised by the local McGrory family, who recently availed of the charity’s services. The funds raised by the family were matched by Marine Harvest.

The fundraising total of €8,650 was recently presented by Maire and Jodie McGrory to Siobhán and George Bates of the Donegal Branch of the Irish Kidney Association.

The Irish Kidney Association supports the needs of renal patients and their families and carers. Over the past year, some Marine Harvest staff and their immediate family members have found themselves grateful for the vitally important life-saving services the Irish Kidney Association provides.

Marine Harvest Ireland have thanked the staff and community for their participation and support in this year’s event.

Maurice Kelly, HR Manager at Marine Harvest Ireland said, “We would like express our gratitude to everyone who raised funds and came along to the 5k fun run. We are absolutely delighted to make this donation to the Irish Kidney Association as we have seen and heard first-hand over the past year the difference their services and support makes to those suffering renal failure.

“Jodie’s transplant has been described as life-changing and we’re delighted to be able to support a charity that has made a huge difference to a family in our community.”
