Michael D Higgins ahead but Casey close second in Donegal as first count in

Michael D Higgins is leading the Presidential race in Donegal but Peter Casey is coming a close second. 

The official first count for Donegal was announced by county registrar and returning officer Geraldine O’Connor after 4pm this afternoon.

Just over 40,000 people out of a total electorate of 120,000 turned up to cast their votes across Donegal.

The following are the official figures for the first count.

Total Electorate: 119,318

Total Voted: 40,256

Spoiled votes: 734

Total Valid Poll: 39,522

Peter Casey 12,952 (32.8%)

Gavin Duffy 747 (1.9%)

Joan Freeman 2,563 (6.3%)

Seán Gallagher 3,684 (9.3%)

Michael D. Higgins 15,052 (38.1%)

Liadh Ni Riada 4,524 (11.4%)
