Protest votes sees name of Gemma Doherty written on ballot papers

A number of voters across Donegal spoiled their votes by writing the name of failed Presidential candidate Gemma Doherty.

The journalist failed in her attempt to get any nominations to stand in the race.

However, a number of election papers in various election boxes across Donegal had the name of Ms Doherty written on the ballot papers.

The campaigning reporter, who formerly worked in the Irish Independent, produced a controversial documentary on missing schoolgirl Mary Boyle.

Other ballot papers were spoiled when voters wrote the words ‘No abortion in Donegal.’

These votes were placed in the spoiled votes section and not counted.
