Watch: Donegal bride drives herself to her own wedding – by bus!

A Donegal woman made sure she wasn’t late for her own wedding after she used her own bus to get there.

Sharon Gallagher is well-known across Ireland as a professional driver for McGinley Coach Travel.

When it came to choosing a wedding car to take her to her reception in the Gaeltacht village of Gortahork, there was only one form of transport she wanted – a 53 seater coach.

Sharon firstly drove her family and bridemaids to Christ the King church in Gortahork.

After the wedding mass she got behind the wheel again and told new husband Michael Leonard from Pettigo to sit back while she drove the bus to meet their 400 guests at the Loch Altan Hotel.

Colleagues even decorated the front of the bus for Sharon and Michael with the word ‘Wedding Bells’ across the windscreen.

Newlyweds Sharon and Michael and their favourite mode of wedding transport!

James McGinley of John McGinley Coach Travel said Sharon is ‘buses mad’ and she didn’t want any air or graces or fancy wedding cars for her big day.

“She came to me a while back and said she wanted to drive one of the buses to her wedding and I thought “sure why not?’

“Sharon is buses mad and I suppose it makes sense. Most brides want fancy wedding cars but not Sharon. She wanted a bit of fun and something to remember her wedding day by and she has certainly done that.

“I put some lettering on the front of the bus with their names on it as a surprise for them and they were delighted. We’re all so happy for them,” he said.

Not to be outdone Michael, who is a farmer, had a John Deere tractor waiting for him at the wedding reception.

The couple are now due to go on a Caribbean cruise for their honeymoon.

James added “I thought they might have wanted to go on a bus tour of Ireland but that might have been a step too far – even for Sharon.”
