A Donegal nominated for prestigious Hostel of the Year award.
The Trá na Rosann Youth Hostel in Downings has been nominated for “Hostel of the Year” in The Great Outdoors UK Reader Awards 2018.
Speaking about the nomination, Roy Murray, Marketing Manager at An Óige said; “We are delighted to be the only Irish nomination in the awards. Trá na Rosann is a unique location with beauty spots like Murder Hole within walking distance, and the atmosphere in the hostel is pure old-school hostelling”.
Trá na Rosann is located in a remote Irish speaking area on the Rosguill Peninsula. The 26-bed hostel is just a short walk from the nearby Trá na Rosann beach. It is nestled between hills and the Atlantic Ocean. At the time of its opening, the hostel was the most westerly hostel in Europe.
Originally a hunting lodge, Trá na Rosann is the most northerly hostel in Ireland and was designed by English architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens, who famously designed the Memorial Gardens as well as several well-known buildings in New Delhi and Cape Town. Sir Lutyens designed the hostel so that it reflected and blended into the landscape by ensuring the building took on the same look as the mountains behind it.
“This nomination is a testament to the hard work put in by devoted volunteer managers and work parties who work tirelessly during the off season to make sure the hostel is up to scratch and a pleasant and happy place to stay”, added Frank Dempsey, Volunteer Coordinator at Trá na Rosann.
