Four men have been arrested in connection with an assault on Donegal soccer referee Daniel Sweeney.

The men – two aged in their 20s, one teenager and a man in his 40s – were arrested this morning and are being questioned about the assault.

Mr Sweeney, who is originally from Dungloe, was assaulted at a game between Horseleap United and Mullingar Town in Horseleap, County Offaly on November 11.

He sustained facial injuries, including a fractured jaw, and required surgery after the incident.

The men arrested are being held at Mullingar, Tullamore and Birr Garda stations.

Late last week, three Mullingar Town players and a spectator – who was found to have been serving a suspension for a previous assault on a match official – were banned from all football activity for 40 years.
