December 1, 2018

A man has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of three Donegal women who were returning home from a sun holiday last summer.

Margaret McGonagle (69), her daughter Mairead Mundy (37) and their friend Rachel Cassidy Battles (39), from Bruckless were all killed in a traffic collision in Co Louth last July.

Jason Rowntree (32) of Plantation House, Kingscourt, Co Cavan, pleaded guilty before Dundalk Circuit Court to dangerous driving causing their deaths.

The women were travelling home from Dublin Airport when the collision happened at Aclint, on the Louth/Monaghan border on 21 July 2017.

A six-year-old girl in the car was rushed to hospital but survived.

Judge Martina Baxter heard Rowntree, a farmer, had no previous convictions and had not come to the Gardai’s attention since the crash.

She remanded the accused on continuing bail and ordered a probation and welfare report on him.
