Listen: Niall Friel savours the moment as Gaoth Dobhair rejoice

As Niall Friel stood ready to hoist the Seamus McFerran Cup into the Omagh evening, he had to do a double take.

A Gaoth Dobhair crowd like had never been seen before had swarmed the Healy Park pitch after the west Donegal side’s Ulster final win over Scotstown.

Friel was the Gaoth Dobhair U21 captain as they won the Ulster U21 title earlier this year and it’s now two Ulster tiles, a Donegal SFC and Donegal Division 1 crown Friel has lifted in 2018.

“I’ll look back in a few years time and it’s a moment that will be forever with me. It’s a memory I’ll always hold with me,” he said.

The energy had been sapped from both teams after a real struggle in testing conditions and Gaoth Dobhair needed extra time before securing the win.

Friel said: “It was ridiculous. We were out on our feet. That’s what we’ve trained all year for.

“The last few years, there have been cold winters in Gaoth Dobhair – but we’ll enjoy Christmas this year!”
