McLaughlin to the fore as Southend overcome Luton

Stephen McLaughlin played a lead role as Southend United reached round three of the Checkatrade Trophy.

Southend defeated Luton Town 4-2 on penalties at Kenilworth Road.

McLaughlin netted an 88th minute equaliser for Southend, just seven minutes after Arthur Read put Luton ahead.

McLaughlin scored a penalty in the shoot-out as the Shrimpers advanced.
