Dismay as youth service’s ‘Christmas Miracle’ dreams are dashed

The Donegal Youth Service has cancelled a campaign to buy their headquarters building in Letterkenny Town Centre.

The organisation had hoped to raise up to €100,000 to fund the purchase of La Scala House on the Port Road, which recently went on the market. The sale announcement sparked fears that the hub would have to move when the building comes under new ownership.

An extensive fundraising drive was launched by DYS, asking for a Miracle on 16-18 Port Road, so that they could keep their location. It was hoped that the headquarters, which are in a rented space on the second floor, could be expanded to the ground floor for greater accessibility.

The campaign was closed on Tuesday evening, after €3,442 was raised in almost 30 days.

A DYS statement thanked all 116 donators and praised the support they received from the community.

Donators have been offered a chance to get a refund or put the money towards Youth Talk Donegal service.

A spokesperson said: “For those that donated we would like to put the money raised towards our Youth Talk Donegal service. It is a unique community based mental health support service for young people, which despite being in high demand receives no core funding, so we have to rely on donations and fundraising to keep it running. This money would make a big difference to the lives of the young people who use this service.

“However we know that when you donated it was towards our dream of buying the building, so we understand if you would like your donation returned. Please contact us and we can arrange a refund.

“We also hope you will consider us and the work that we do with young people throughout the county if you are fundraising in the future. And would like to say a special thanks to everyone who chose us as the charity for their birthday fundraisers in the past few weeks.”
