A further allocation of €30,000 has been made towards an urban adventure sports initiative in Letterkenny.
Local county councillor Jimmy Kavanagh has welcomed the move.
“This allocation of €30,000 follows on a previous allocation of €47,000 towards this initiative, the funding is from the dormant accounts via Sports Ireland and the project is being jointly promoted by Donegal Sports Partnership and Donegal County Council.
“The idea behind the initiative is to provide young urban dwellers with an opportunity to sample adventure sports that might not otherwise be easily accessed in an urban area,” he said.
Widespread consultation with local youth in Letterkenny has already taken place and that research is now being examined with a view to taking the project forward.
A decision will now be made on suitable activities and deciding on where best to locate the facilities, to meet the needs of the young people of the town.
This additional funding will allow Donegal Sports Partnership and Donegal County Council to progress the initiative, finalise plans, design and begin the process of making adventure sports activities a reality.
Cllr Kavanagh added “The project will help promote healthy living, fitness and wellbeing and will appeal to many young people who have sporting interests outside the mainstream sports.”
Cllr. Kavanagh had a motion to Letterkenny Municipal council in 2017 asking them to apply for funding under this initiative, and is delighted that the project is progressing and that this second allocation of funds has now been made.
