Boxing – Carn host a busy night, while McShane topples Neeson in Dungiven

Donegal boxers were busy over the weekend with tournaments in Dungiven and Carndonagh on Friday and Saturday night.

Carndonagh ABC hosted a 13-bout show on Saturday night and there were some belting contests for the crown.

There were three cracking fights at 63kgs, with Martin McConigley of Letterkenny ABC beating Carndonagh’s Michael Hirrell on a unanimous decision.

Carn’s James Devlin stopped Dunfanghy puncher Seanna Jackson in the second round and in one of the best fights of the night Errigal ABC’s Peter Clarke defeated Andrew Cunningham from Carn on a split decision.

At 75kgs, Oisin Devlin, James’s brother, recorded a fine win for Carn when he stopped Leon Ward of St John Bosco during the second round.

Dean Friel of Carrigart edged Oscar Simmons of Carn 2-1 and Harry Good from Letterkenny ABC caught the eye on the way to a win over Carndonagh man Gerard McCurdy.

There were also wins for Mark Collum (Letterkenny), Chris Gallagher (Letterkenny), Scott Hara (Errigal), Caolan Hegarty (Carrigart), Daragh McDermott (Carndonagh), Conor Horan (Carndonagh) and Rio McDaid (Carndonagh).

On Friday night, there were four Donegal boxers in action at the St Canice’s ABC annual presentation and boxing show, held in the St Canice’s GAA club in Dungiven.

Former pro boxers Eamon O’Kane and Paul McCloskey were the special guests on the night.

Letterkenny ABC’s Paddy McShane gained revenge on Shay Neeson of Moneyglass. McShane recorded an excellent win via a unanimous decision, just two weeks after Neeson took a split decision win in an Ulster 9 County semi-final in Shantallow.

There were defeats, however, for Clonmany’s Adam McDaid against Guilford’s Jamie Boyle; Dunree’s Caolan Collins against Caolan Conway of Dungiven; and for Dunree’s Pierce Berryman against Conal McAleer from Moneyglass.
