A group of people visiting Donegal hoping to see the Northern Lights on Christmas night have spotted a strange red light above Inishowen.
Experts who study the Aurora Borealis have studied pictures of the lights and have been left speechless.
On closer inspection, the shape of reindeer and a sleigh is almost visible.
But even more incredible is the fact that the reindeer and sleigh behind the red light appear to be moving at rapid speed.
Northern Lights expert Mary Nuyeer said the red lights could be a sign that Santa is on his way to Donegal.
She said “It’s incredible. It was visible to the naked eye but it was travelling so fast that not even our cameras could keep up with it.
“It must have been Santa and his reindeer doing a fly-over to see if all the boys and girls were getting ready for bed.
“He’ll be doing another check once more around 8pm to make sure all the good children are tucked up safe and sound.”
Another Northern Lights watcher, Holly Bush, said there were even reports that the sleigh had been spotted having grounded beside Fanad Lighthouse so Rudolph and his fellow reindeer could refuel.
RTE correspondent Eileen Magner has been dispatched from her base in Sligo hoping to catch a glimpse of the strange red lights and perhaps even a picture of the big man himself.
Well-known Lifford cameraman Joe Boland from Northwest Newspix did manage to get a blurred picture of Santa having camped out all evening.
