A spoke in the number of seriously ill patients being admitted to Letterkenny University Hospital has led to serious delays.

The Emergency Department at Letterkenny University Hospital is reported to be very busy today as a result.

A spokesperson for the hospital’s communications group, Saolta said “We have admitted a lot of seriously ill patients recently, many of whom remain in the ED, awaiting a bed.

“We apologise for the distress or inconvenience caused to patients or their loved ones who are experiencing long wait times.

“We are committed to treating everyone who presents at our ED but we do so strictly in order of medical priority.”

The statement added that it wanted to remind the public to attend the Emergency Department only in the case of real emergencies and they should contact their GP or GP Out-of-Hours service in the first instance.

“This is a challenging time for our hospital but thanks to the huge efforts of our frontline staff patients are continuing to receive safe care during this period,” added the spokesperson for the hospital.
