Partner of the late Cllr Reid begins court action to remain in home

January 25, 2019

The partner of the late Donegal Councillor JJ Reid has initiated High Court action over fears she will be removed from the home they shared.

Former Fine Gael Councillor and businessman JJ Reid passed away on Thursday following a long illness.

His partner of 25 years, Ms Fidelma Flynn, took a case to the High Court this Friday afternoon in a bid to have Mr Reid waked at his home at Knockfair Stranorlar. She also sought to have temporary orders and injunctions put in place to ensure she can stay in the home they shared, the Irish Times reports.

It is reported that Ms Flynn is concerned that Mr Reid’s family may remove her from the home and she claimed that his family resented her and never accepted her throughout their relationship.

Ms Flynn and Mr Reid, then a widower, began a relationship in the 1990s. She claimed she was Mr Reid’s primary carer during his illness, but when he was admitted to hospital she had to enter negotiations with the Reid family to see him.

Ms Justice Leonie Reynolds expressed concerns over the timing of the court action and urged that other avenues be explored before Ms Flynn applied for orders again.
