Nathan Boyle’s first-half penalty gave Finn Harps a narrow win over Drogheda United in their latest pre-season friendly today at United Park.

Boyle struck from the spot in the 17th minute and it proved to be the only goal of the game. Boyle was fouled by Conor Kane and the Harps striker dusted himself down to fire the penalty past Paul Skinner, the Drogheda United ‘keeper.

Drogheda were shook into action and Mark Hughes was denied by Harps netminder Ciaran Gallagher before Chris Lyons cracked the rebound off the goal-frame.

Gallagher held on to an attempt from Adam Wixted while Mark Doyle looped over the top in the second half.

Chances were few and far between in part two with both sides using the chance to run the respective benches.

Harps’ line-up included youngsters Michael Gallagher and Niall McGinley, while Liam Walsh, Stephen Doherty, Daragh Ellison and Ryan Finn were among the replacements deployed.

Meanwhile, Shane Doherty, who had been on trial at Harps for a part of the pre-season campaign, has signed for Galway United. Doherty featured in early pre-season clashes, including the 1-1 draw against the Inishowen League.

Doherty has family ties in Donegal but has signed with Galway having captained Rowan University in America.
