Stand-alone funding for the Laghy to Pettigo Road has been secured with €1million granted by the Department of Transport.
It is the first time the South Donegal road has received funding of this nature, following a motion to the council in 2017.
Speaking following the announcement, Councillor Michael Naughton said: “This will be a huge asset to the South and South West of Donegal, not alone to Donegal Town but to areas such as Glencolmcille.
“Many people also use this road while travelling to Dublin and other parts of the country from Glenties and Ardara.
“It is also vital to Killybegs Harbour, our biggest asset in the south of the county,” he added.
“Killybegs expect twelve cruise ships this year and one will stay overnight. One of our counties biggest tourism attractions Sliabh Liag will undoubtedly benefit from this news.”
“It’s time that Pettigo and this area were put on the map and I am hopeful that works will probably commence in the near future and we look forward to attracting more tourists and more business investment in the coming years.”
