Donegal County Council has issued a warning due to asbestos concerns in the aftermath of the fire on Buncrana Main Street.

There are fears over an asbestos roof which was damaged in Sunday night’s fire at Upper Main Street and Ferris Lane.

An asbestos specialist is due to assess the area this afternoon as council staff remain at the scene.

The public has been warned to stay away from the area. Residents living in or near the buildings are advised to keep their doors and windows closed until further notice.

Gardaí are investigating the fire which is believed to have started in John Barr’s clothing store after 9pm. The blaze spread to the Buncrana Plaza before it was brought under control late last night.

Anyone with concerns in relation to the issue can contact Donegal County Council on 0749153900

Upper Main Street Buncrana remains closed to traffic and pedestrians. Diversions are in place.
