Bundoran’s Diarmaid Doherty returns to the political fray

Bundoran businessman Diarmaid Doherty has announced that he will run in the local County Council elections in Donegal.

Doherty. who has previously served on Bundoran Town Council, will be running as an independent candidate in the Donegal Electoral Area this May.

One of his key motivations for returning to political life, he said, was to redress an imbalance of representation for his area in the council.

In a statement issued today, Doherty said: “Having served on Bundoran Town Council I felt great satisfaction from being able to help individuals and my community on a daily basis. I am now hoping to bring that ability to a new level by putting my name forward to run for the County Council in the Donegal Electoral Area.

“The challenges that face our communities from Glencolmcille to Bundoran, are many, and I feel that with my involvement in community groups, local business and the town council that I will be suitably equipped to bring fresh thinking to the council chamber and be in a great position to get things done.”

Doherty continued: “After Ballyshannon & Bundoran Town Councils were sacrificed on the altar of political reform, to pay for the sins of The Government, we in the south of the county seem to have lost our influence on Donegal County Council and I look forward to working with all elected members from the Donegal Electoral area to redress the unbalance that has developed.

“The messages of support that I have received so far have been extremely encouraging and I am eager to get on the campaign trail and engage with as many people as possible, to listen to the issues that are affecting you, your communities and your businesses. Hopefully I will have the honour of representing the wonderful people of Donegal in the next Donegal County Council.”
