There are calls to involve the local farming community in the Council’s winter gritting programme.
Fiann Fáil Councillor Ciarán Brogan has said that the Council should, ‘as a matter of urgency’ begin to engage with farmers.
Councillor Brogan believes farmers could be used to assist in the spreading of grit on Donegal’s roads.
Councillor Brogan has tabled a motion to that effect to tomorrow’s Letterkenny Municipal District meeting in Milford.
His is one of three motions relating to gritting on the agenda.
Councillor Michael McBride says that salt/grit bunkers should be provided for all housing estates and a map made available online indicating where supplies are located.
And Councillor Ian McGarvey asks that the gritting service ‘cover areas at schools, nursing homes, the town of Ramelton that has steep streets, in and out of town at times of severe frost.’
