Letterkenny University Hospital has issued a public notice this Tuesday as the Emergency Department is extremely busy.
The hospital is seeing a higher than average number of patients attending A&E this week.
On Monday, 148 patients attended the ED. This is significantly higher than the average number that usually presents to the ED, which ranges between 105 and 115 patients per day.
There were 38 patients recorded in the LUH trolley watch this morning.
Due to the high volume of patients attending the Emergency Department, the Saolta group is asking the public to only present at an ED if they are in need of emergency medical treatment.
A spokesperson said: “Patients should contact their GP or GP Out-of-Hours service in the first instance. Patients attending ED are prioritised, with urgent cases treated first.
“We apologise for the distress or inconvenience caused to patients or their loved ones who are experiencing long wait times.”
