New lights to be installed at ‘black hole’ in Letterkenny

A ‘black hole’ in Letterkenny is set to be illuminated with the installation of new street lights.

Lighting is expected to be erected on a stretch of the R245 at Glebe on the Kiltoy Road, which is used extensively by walkers and joggers.

“Health and safety concerns have been raised by walkers and joggers in the area,” Councillor Adrian Glackin told a meeting of the Letterkenny Municipal District.

“The area in question is about 150 metres long and is in complete darkness from early evening.

“I was out on a visit to the area. When you come around a corner, it’s in complete darkness. It’s a black hole in the area. We would only need six to eight lights and hopefully it would be done.”

A workshop will be held, following the clarification of funding, to agree on locations for public lighting to be installed.

“This location is already on the list for consideration,” the Council said.

Councillor Gerry McMonagle, who seconded Councillor Glackin’s motion, added: “We need to make sure there is proper lighting and we welcome the answer from the Council.”
