Donna Barr sweeps into Elite semis as McGinty gears up for Dossen

Illies Golden Gloves light-flyweight Donna Barr is into the semi-finals of the National Elite Championships.

Barr overcame Smithfield’s Ciara Walsh in her quarter-final tonight at the National Stadium.

Barr took a unanimous decision win on the scorecards

Last month, Barr reached the finals of the Ulster Elite Championships, but was edged out by Canal’s Chloe Fleck.

Barr has had an injury hit time, but four years ago was a finalist in the National Elites, losing out to Lauren Hogan.

Barr faces Emma Feeney of Virginia in a semi-final tomorrow night, a repeat of an Ulster semi-final won by the Illies woman.

Also tomorrow night, Brett McGinty will aim to reach the semi-finals of the middleweight division.

The St Johnston man is up against a fancied and in-form Gabriel Dossen, who last week put defending champion Michael Nevin to the sword.

McGinty was beaten by Fearghus Quinn in the Ulster Elites and is aiming to make it third time lucky here, having lost out in the last two years in Elite finals.

The Oakleaf ABC ace has shaken off a virus of late and will be gunning to advance when he steps through the ropes tomorrow.
