From trash to treasure: Junk Kouture designs as Donegal sisters reach Northern finals

Brodie and Mireen Mc Feely have been selected to represent the Loreto Letterkenny in the Northern Regional Finals of Junk Kouture 2019 on March 1.

The competition is open to all pupils who are enrolled in second level education in either Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland and celebrates elements such as fashion, design, engineering and environmental sustainability, transforming them into a creative contest like no other.

Getting creative, the girls used a damaged gazebo for the skirt and bodice and various garden paraphernalia that was destined for the skip.

The McFeely’s were also conscious of the overuse of plastics and the damage to the environment so they used beachcombed bottles and bottles from their recycle bin to show that with some thought you could repurpose plastic in various ways, as they did by cutting them up to become butterflies.

Handpainting, embroidering, hand sewing, and weaving everything in their creation, the sisters looked at the life cycle of the butterfly.

For their design, they used the theme of a caterpillar into a butterfly, signifying the transformation of something ordinary into something totally different to work with the ethos of Junk Kouture.

Speaking as the voting opens, the sisters said: “We are so excited to be through to the Northern Regional Finals of Junk Kouture in Derry.”

“Well done to everyone who got through and good luck to everyone in the lifeline vote.

“Please vote for us from Monday, February 18th to Friday, February 22nd.”

Speaking to Donegal Daily, their mother Bernie McFeely explained what attracted the girls to the beautiful butterfly theme.

She said: “The girls have loved butterflies since they were small and we grew buddleias, known as the butterfly plant, in our garden to attract them.

“Voting for them starts on today (Monday) through to Friday 22nd February and we would appreciate it if you could vote for Chrysalis every day this week.

“All votes go to 10% of their mark on the night,” McFeely added.

“They would love to go through to represent the Northern Region in Dublin in May.”
