Donegal’s Croke Park motion fails at Congress

A motion from Donegal to prevent counties from declaring Croke Park as a ‘home’ venue in the Super 8s has failed.

The motion was before this afternoon’s GAA Congress in Wexford.

However, the motion received just 36 per cent support. Donegal County Board Chairman Mick McGrath addressed Congress to speak on the motion, arguing that Croke Park could not serve as both a home and a neutral venue for a team.

In 2018, Dublin defeated Donegal in the first of the ‘Super 8’ games at Croke Park.

Dublin also had a ‘home’ fixture at Croke Park against Roscommon as well as the supposed neutral game against Donegal – which Donegal spoke out against at the time.

Dublin GAA’s John Costello said they would nominate Parnell Park as their home venue if the motion passed, but stressed the limitations of its 8,500 capacity.

Costello described the Donegal motion as ‘divisive’. Donegal’s Central Council delegate Seamus Ó Domhnaill noted that Donegal were the last county to beat Dublin at Croke Park.

“We’re not afraid of any team,” he said, adding: “We don’t expect to play two home Super 8 games in MacCumhaill Park.”

The motion required over 60 per cent to be passed.
